SPOTLIGHT ON PILRIG PARK SCHOOL

28/7/2020

This quarter’s spotlight is on pupils from Pilrig Park. These young people are showcasing the fantastic work experience placements that they have participated in over the last few months and talking about how important it has been for them to understand what the world of work looks like.

Let’s hear from some of these pupils and find out how they’ve been inspired by their experiences of the workplace.

Michael – "working with the Furniture Depot was brilliant because I was working the other boys and the taught me how to build furniture and how to carry heavy items safely. I had to work in a team and listen to them but it was good fun."

Zeeshaan – "I love ICT but I wanted to find out what jobs people do working with computers.  My visits were good and I felt confident speaking to the staff.  They were really helpful.  I am now going to another placement to learn how to rebuild and  fix computers."

Michael – "We went to visit a Robertson Construction building site and the workers were brilliant.  It was really interesting finding out what they did.  We had to put on the hard hat, the steal toe capped boots and the Hi Vis vest.  I looked like a real builder. I think I would like to work in the construction business when I leave school."

Declan – "I was really nervous before going on my WEP pre placement visit but once I met the staff and found out what I was going to do. I felt really good."

Mark – "I found school difficult last year as I wasn’t really interested but I spent some time talking to staff who could help me link with music courses and employers. I really enjoy school now , my music course and the employers I have visited in the music industry.  I am really focused on things right now.  Its awesome and I have recorded made my own Rap song now."

Jack – "I have learnt to travel by my self to my work experience and do the job without support from my school.  I feel confident and I am speaking more to people.  I am really happy.  I go every Wednesday morning. I like the jobs I do."

Keith Mackay, Principle Teacher at Pilrig Park – "Working with DYW and JET Flex has greatly helped to motivate our senior Pupils and to offer opportunities that they thought would never be available to them.  They have a purpose to their learning and want to learn and experience the jobs they could possibly do when they leave school. The employers and support has been brilliant and we look forward to continuing this partnership and moving forward to developing this further.  Its their future and we need to make sure we invest and support. Together we can make a difference for our Young People."

Thanks very much to all the staff and pupils at Pilrig Park for sharing their experiences!
