This quarter our spotlight on a partner employer highlights the diverse work of Robertson Construction. A UK-wide company, Robertson Construction have supported the work of DYW Edinburgh, Midlothian & East Lothian for over several years and have helped to shape good practice in the region for how industry can engage with young people in education.
Robertson Construction have numerous building projects across the city and they’re always keen to use these sites as an opportunity to demonstrate to young people what working in the industry can look like. They are passionate about inspiring young people to explore a career in construction and have worked in partnership with DYW to inform young people as to the various career pathways into the industry.
Robertson Constructions’ engagement with schools has been varied and tailored to meet the needs of schools and young people at different ages and stages. They have delivered a range of activities across the region from industry insight sessions in schools, site visits to their construction sites and in-school employability sessions that prepare young people for the world of work. Alongside this, they have provided young people with meaningful work experience placements across their sites and offered Modern Apprenticeship opportunities to young people who are keen to join the industry.
It is the mission and purpose of DYW to create all young people regardless of geography, background or barriers have equity of access to opportunities to be informed and inspired. In support of this vision, Robertson Construction have developed a partnership with Pilrig Park School whose pupils have mild, moderate or complex additional support needs. Robertson Construction went into the school to deliver interactive workshop sessions to senior pupils on what jobs in construction look like and the importance of health & safety. On the back of these workshops, the pupils had the opportunity to visit one of the Robertson sites, see how what they learnt works in practice and meet a variety of people in the industry.
Alongside their activities with secondary schools, Robertson Construction are passionate about inspiring the younger generation and are engaging with primary pupils to introduce them to the world of work. Children’s perceptions of the workplace are already being shaped at primary level and the role of industry is critical to supporting schools to broaden the horizons of children at an early age.
‘Every Robertson project comes with a responsibility to the surrounding community and environment. As we are effectively part of these communities, engaging with young people is not only good practice, we are measured on it. Whether onsite or in schools, colleges and universities we seek to promote our industry, the variety of different opportunities within it and to tap into the potential future workforce. DYW’s role in this is instrumental. They are key to the centralising of the networking process that draws industry together with education providers, partners and young people and Robertson benefits greatly from this with increased presence and profile, resulting in events, engagement activities, site visits and work experience placements.’ - Paul Struthers (Community Development, Robertson Construction)
