I left Lasswade High School in the summer of 2015 in 5th year with 2 Highers in Art and Graphic Communication. At school I studied art and graphics because drawing was already a hobby of mine and I really enjoyed it. However, I wanted to be an Egyptologist, an archaeologist who specializes in Egyptology and had planned to go into a career in history but I was struggling with the workload in Higher history alongside my other subjects and was informed I couldn’t sit the final exam.
I decided to apply for College in February 2015 and applied for a Computer Arts course as it was the course I was really intrigued by, my art and graphics Highers gave me a portfolio and a good understanding of art to go into an interview prepared.
I had an amazing 2-year experience at college it allowed me to try out digital art, a side of art that I had never experienced before. For my first year, I completed an NC in Creative Media and then went on to do an HNC. It allowed me to build my confidence in both my art and in my everyday life as well as helped me to set my long term career goals of working for a triple-A gaming company. I left Edinburgh College in 2017 with a HNC in Computer Art and Design.
After leaving college until now I have been working for Midlothian Council as a Modern Apprenticeship for Business Gateway as a Business Administrator. I decided to apply for a Modern Apprenticeship as I want to take a break from classroom-style education and get some work experience, it was a full time and paid position so I was doing a job alongside gaining a qualification. It has allowed me to experience working life while being supported and helped to grow in my role. I have enjoyed my role and the people I have had the opportunity to work with.
While I have been doing my apprenticeship I have applied to university and got into Teesside University in Middlesbrough and in September I will be going down to study Concept Art starting in year 2. This has put me on the path to become a concept artist for a triple-A gaming company along with other opportunities.
My journey so far has been completely unexpected, I had planned to stay on till the end of high school and go straight into university instead I took the scenic route and I wouldn’t change a thing.
