On 28th January this year, eleven of Edinburgh’s best known tourist attractions and hospitality partners came together to provide an interactive and informative experience for almost 200 S2 pupils from Holy Rood RC High School as part of "A Day in Edinburgh" project.
The project, developed and pioneered by Mercat Tours, aims to provide young people from disadvantaged backgrounds with an experience and sense of ownership of their hometown and raise awareness of employment opportunities in the tourism and cultural sectors. Pupils participating in "A Day in Edinburgh" visited up to three different tourism and hospitality venues over the day to enjoy the visitor experience as well as find out about the jobs, skills and pathways into the sector.
Kat Brogan, Managing Director of Mercat Tours, describes "A Day in Edinburgh" project as a cost free, interactive, fully inclusive day-long programme of visits to tourism/cultural businesses for a secondary-age year group to experience, and understand, the world of work in the tourism industry.
“Tourism is a generous, dynamic industry full of opportunities and welcomes everyone who wants to learn, develop and thrive. This project demonstrates the power of working together to help our young people discover their city, and then get excited about jobs they can enjoy in our sector. Our tourism community is central to Edinburgh’s culture and every business involved in the project has helped share that story and success.” (Kat Brogan, Managing Director of Mercat Tours).
The broad range of tourism and hospitality partners involved highlighted the variety and diversity of roles across the tourism sector and enhanced pupils’ knowledge both of the workplace and employer’s expectations through real experience.
“Our excellent partnership with Mercat Tours has provided our young people with the opportunity to learn more about the Tourism industry as well as gain holistic skills required for learning and life after school. Experiences like the Day in Edinburgh, a full day immersive tourism experience facilitated and funded by Mercat Tours, offered our learners a wonderfully rich learning experience and an opportune occasion for our school staff to link with employers to further support the school’s DYW strategy. We recognise, promote and celebrate the immense value in offering many and varied opportunities for our learners to engage with the world of work. Our thanks to Mercat Tours and all the employers who provided this opportunity.” (Liam Mitchell, DYW Lead at Holy Rood RC High School)
The employers involved in "A Day in Edinburgh" project include Camera Obscura, Scottish Historic Buildings Trust (Riddles Court), Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh Dungeon, Scotch Whisky Experience, Code Hostels, Rabbies Tours, National Trust for Scotland (The Georgian House), Lyceum Theatre, Yotel and Mercat Tours.
